Woman Struck and Killed by Unmarked Sheriffs Vehicle
The Orlando Sentinel reports that an unmarked Orange County Sheriff’s unmarked van struck and killed a 44-year-old woman recently. The pedestrian accident occurred around 11 p.m. as the woman crossed North Orange Blossom Trail near Sadler Road, a bit north of Zellwood and south of Mount Dora. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the 30-year-old sheriff’s deputy was reportedly driving northbound in an unmarked Orange County Sheriff’s Office van on North Orange Blossom Trail when he struck the woman with the van.
Prominent Cardiologist Killed in Orlando Pedestrian Accident
Boston.com reports that a well-respected and prominent cardiologist from the Boston area was struck and killed recently while jogging in an Orlando pedestrian accident. The 63-year-old was the director of Advanced Heart Disease at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and was in the area to attend the Orlando for the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2009 Conference.
Florida Bicycle Accident Claims Life of Mother of Seven
CBS4 describes a tragic story where a mother of seven was struck and killed in a hit-and-run bicycle accident in Southern Florida. The 42-year-old victim was found lying on SW 222 Street at 1 a.m. in the morning recently. Police officials say that woman had been struck and killed by a driver who fled the scene of the accident. Officials with the Florida Highway patrol said that this Florida bicycle accident was the third in three days in which a person was killed by a hit-and-run driver.
Pedestrian Accident Claims Life of ’08 UF Graduate
The Gainesville Sun reports that a car driven by a 20-year-old woman from Gainesville struck and killed a 24-year-old Gainesville resident, who was described by family and friends as a knowledgeable, caring person. Police investigating the accident said that the accident occurred around 6:45 in the evening of November 2 as the victim was walking south in the 2300 block of Archer Road. She was not in a crosswalk. The driver of the car was eastbound on Archer Road and told police she had just moved into the center lane of the three-lane road to avoid hitting a group of pedestrians when she struck the victim.
New Tollbooths Reduce Auto Accidents
A woman driving a 1997 Honda was driving through a tollbooth’s E-Pass lane on State Road 408 on June 21, 2007, when an 18-wheeler Orange County trash truck carrying 80,000 pounds of garbage struck her. The Orlando Sentinel reported that police issued no citations, but Orange County did agree to pay nearly $3,000 to compensate the accident victim for neck injuries and damage to her car.
Trucking Accident Results in Serious Injuries for Teen
An accident involving a semi truck and a van at the intersection of Interstates 10 and 75 in Columbia County resulted in two people sent to the hospital with injuries. A 15-year-old girl from Alabama, transported to Shands at the University of Florida, sustained injuries described as serious. The 42-year-old driver of the 1999 Dodge van, also from Alabama, received medical treatment for undisclosed minor injuries at Lake City Medical. The 43-year-old driver of the 2000 Freightliner semi truck involved in the accident was reportedly unhurt.
Orange County Offers Free Teen Driving Safety Training
Auto accidents are the leading cause of death for young people aged 16 to 20, but some forward-thinking people in Orange County are trying to change this fact. The Florida Safety Council announced recently that high school students in Orange County would be able to apply for free driver training. This free training will include six hours of behind-the-wheel driving lessons in traffic and driver education classroom courses.

An Orlando man accused of causing an auto accident that claimed the life of another man entered a guilty plea recently. The accused was allegedly involved in an illegal street race that killed a bystander watching the race.
Auto Accident Claims Two Lives
A couple married in Tallahassee last April was killed and their eight-year-old daughter orphaned in a drunk driving auto accident recently. As recounted in this Tallahassee Democrat article, the Havana couple wed at the Tallahassee Moose Lodge last spring after being together for more than ten years and having a daughter. On the evening of October 9, 2009, the couple was driving to the mother’s house to drop off their daughter at her grandparent’s to spend the night. As the couple waited to merge into traffic on the way, a drunk driver crashed his Dodge pickup truck into the back of their two-door Pontiac.
Lake County Police Investigating Hit-and-Run Pedestrian Accident
An article published recently in the Orlando Sentinel describes a hit-and-run pedestrian accident that claimed the life of a 16-year-old Leesburg High student from Okahumpka. A car hit the young man as he walked along County Road 33 on October 4 while talking to his girlfriend on his cell phone. After the pedestrian accident, the victim was airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center where he died when taken off life support. Read the rest »
