Local authorities are currently trying to determine the cause of a serious semi-truck accident that occurred last Thursday morning along Interstate 75 in Sumter County and injured both drivers in the process.

According to preliminary reports from members of the Florida Highway Patrol, it was approximately 8:45 a.m. on June 9, 2022, when a 65-year-old semi-truck driver from Summerfield was driving his tractor-trailer in the southbound direction of I-75 outside Bushnell. As he approached the vicinity of mile marker 313 while traveling in the center lane, he struck the left-rear side of another semi-truck that was located in the outside lane of the interstate.

The collision between both of the big rigs caused the first semi-truck to jackknife before stopping within the outside and center lanes of I-75. The second semi-truck came to a rest along the outside shoulder and median of the road.

Sumter County emergency response teams and troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol were dispatched to the scene of the accident. Upon their arrival, they quickly determined that the 65-year-old Summerfield man was in serious condition and required a medevac transport to the nearest hospital. The other semi-truck driver, a 23-year-old man from Virginia, sustained minor injuries during the incident and declined medical treatment at the scene.

The southbound lanes of Interstate 75 were shut down for a little over 2 hours, but they were reopened once authorities retrieved all of the necessary evidence for a thorough investigation and recovery crews were able to clean-up the debris caused by the tractor-trailers during the collision.

This semi-truck crash is under examination by officials with the Florida Highway Patrol. It is unclear if any individual will face legal charges related to the collision.
