Two People Seriously Injured in Central Florida Trucking Accident

Florida Highway Patrol troopers investigating a trucking accident in Lake County report that two people were sent to area hospitals with serious injuries after their cars were struck by a tractor-trailer. Troopers report that the 19-year-old driver of a Honda Civic was northbound on Buckhill Road around 8:30 a.m. one recent morning when he turned into the path of the truck at the intersection with County Road 455. They say that the 51-year-old driver of the truck was eastbound on C.R. 455 at the time of the accident and swerved left to avoid striking the Honda but was unable to avoid the collision. The impact caused the truck’s trailer to topple over and land on a nearby Subaru automobile driven by a 36-year-old Clermont woman.

State Lawmakers Proposes Comprehensive Cell Phone Ban for Youngest Drivers

Florida legislators recently proposed a new law that would ban all drivers aged 18 and younger from using cell phones while behind the wheel. Regular readers of this blog know that Florida lawmakers finally passed a law last spring that bans drivers from sending manual texts while driving, but allows them to read and respond to texts while stopped in traffic. If passed into law, the new bill sponsored by State Rep. Irv Slosberg, D- Boca Raton, would ban cell phone use entirely by drivers 18 and younger.

St. Cloud Man Killed in Motorcycle Accident

A 47-year-old St. Cloud man was killed recently when his motorcycle collided with a tractor-trailer. Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers say that the man was riding his Suzuki motorcycle east on U.S. Highway 192 around 1:30 a.m. when he ran a red light and collided with a semi attempting to make a left turn onto Shady Lane. The motorcyclist was rushed to Orlando Regional Medical Center with massive head and chest injuries but was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Two Teens Seriously Injured in Orange County Bicycle Accident

Two 13-year-old siblings were seriously injured recently when they were struck by a car while riding their bicycles. Accident investigators have not released many details about the accident, but they report that the teens were riding their bicycles with their father when they were struck at a crosswalk at the intersection of Apopka Vineland Road and McCormick Road in west Orange County. Investigators report that a female driver, age and address unknown, was traveling south in her 2009 Volkswagen on Apopka Vineland Road around 2:25 p.m. when she struck the teens.

Man Punches Car After Causing Rear-End Accident in Delray Beach

Police say that a Pompano Beach man took the unusual step of punching a woman’s car after causing a rear-end accident with his pickup truck recently. Officers report that the 50-year-old man rear-ended the woman’s car after it had stopped at a red light in Delray Beach. The man drove off in his Dodge Ram pickup truck after the accident, prompting the lady to follow him into a parking lot, where she confronted the man. After a brief but heated exchange, the man began punching the rear window of the woman’s car before driving off again.

Three People Seriously Injured in Trucking Accident Near Eustis

Florida Highway Patrol troopers are investigating a trucking accident that seriously injured three people on Jan. 11. They report that the accident occurred around 5 p.m. at the intersection of S.R. 44A and Forestdel Drive when a car driven by a 22-year-old DeLand man turned into the path of a tractor-trailer. The driver and two passengers, the driver’s 43-year-old father and a 44-year-old man, were airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where they are being treated for undisclosed injuries. The accident closed S.R. 44A while troopers conducted their investigation, and the road was reopened a few hours after the accident. Troopers say that charges are pending in connection with the accident.

Florida Highway Patrol Capt. Keith Gaston is using a newly formed database and computer models to track Florida auto accident data and help the law enforcement community identify trends. Capt. Gaston began working on the database nearly ten years ago when he was a graduate student at the University of North Florida. He wanted to develop a way for police to collect and analyze accident information in order to better serve their communities. What began with a single handheld GPS device has now become an innovative program at the University of Florida.

Florida Texting Bill Filed in the State Senate

Will Florida finally pass a substantive ban on texting while driving? James O. Cunningham and other Orlando personal injury lawyers certainly hope so. The most recent attempt to enact a texting ban in Florida was filed in the Senate on Nov. 21. If passed, the bill (SB 52) would ban drivers from sending or reading texts, emails and other electronic messages while driving but would not prevent them from reading weather alerts, maps and other navigational tools and safety information.
