A 47-year-old St. Cloud man was killed recently when his motorcycle collided with a tractor-trailer. Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) troopers say that the man was riding his Suzuki motorcycle east on U.S. Highway 192 around 1:30 a.m. when he ran a red light and collided with a semi attempting to make a left turn onto Shady Lane. The motorcyclist was rushed to Orlando Regional Medical Center with massive head and chest injuries but was pronounced dead at the hospital.
FHP Sgt. Kim Montes said that man was riding in the center lane approaching the red light that morning when the semi, which had stopped in the left turn lane at the light, began turning left when the light changed to green. The rider slammed on his brakes and lost control of his bike, which slid on its right side toward the trailer. The motorcycle then struck the rear tires of the semi, ejecting the rider, who came to rest under the semi. Troopers are still investigating the accident but do not expect to press charges against the 35-year-old driver of the truck, who was not injured in the accident.
In many cases, it is the negligent drivers of passenger vehicles, trucks, recreational vehicles and other types of vehicles who cause motorcycle accidents. These negligent drivers frequently pull out in front of riders because they did not see them or did not take the time to look before they change lanes, make turns or pull out into traffic. However, in this case, it appears that the motorcyclist may have been negligent by disobeying a traffic signal and/or driving too fast to stop in time.
If a motorcyclist is negligent and causes an accident that results in injuries to others, they can be held liable for damages just like a negligent driver.
