Orlando personal injury lawyer James O. Cunningham would like to remind readers that not all court awards or settlements result in multi-million dollar damages. Many of the clients he has helped over the last 36 years receive damages in the thousands or tens of thousands, depending on the nature of the injuries. The following post provides an example of clients who could pursue smaller damages in a lawsuit or negotiated settlement.
Area law enforcement officials recently received a call about a possibly stolen vehicle that was involved in an accident with an Orange County Sheriff’s Office patrol car in Orlando. Accident investigators reported that the stolen vehicle was driven by Joshua Chavarria, age and address unknown, who collided with the patrol car and then damaged several other cars as he drove up Colonial Drive in an attempt to elude police.
"(T)he guy stole a car and turned down the alley trying to get away but didn’t realize it was a dead-end," a nearby resident said.
When Chavarria realized that he was being pursued by police, officers said he slammed the stolen car into a shed and damaged an air conditioning unit before ramming the vehicle into a deputy’s car several times. He then struck a Cadillac parked nearby that had just dropped off a woman and her baby.
"We just heard her screaming, and we came outside, and she came outside to me crying with the baby to make sure the baby was OK and said, ‘I don’t know what happened. I was just with some dude. He was giving me a ride.’ That’s all we know," one witness said.
Chavarria then continued about three miles to the intersection of Rouse Road and Colonial Drive, where he struck three more vehicles before fleeing on foot to avoid capture. Sheriff’s deputies apprehended him a short time later.
Thankfully, no one suffered physical injuries due to this man’s recklessness and negligence, but several people certainly suffered many thousands of dollars in property damage.
