Florida Highway Patrol troopers investigating a trucking accident in Lake County report that two people were sent to area hospitals with serious injuries after their cars were struck by a tractor-trailer. Troopers report that the 19-year-old driver of a Honda Civic was northbound on Buckhill Road around 8:30 a.m. one recent morning when he turned into the path of the truck at the intersection with County Road 455. They say that the 51-year-old driver of the truck was eastbound on C.R. 455 at the time of the accident and swerved left to avoid striking the Honda but was unable to avoid the collision. The impact caused the truck’s trailer to topple over and land on a nearby Subaru automobile driven by a 36-year-old Clermont woman.
The driver of the Subaru was rushed to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where she is listed in critical condition. The driver of the Honda was also taken to ORMC, where is he listed in serious condition with undisclosed injuries. The truck driver was not injured in the accident. This accident is still under investigation but troopers report that charges are pending.
Initially, it may appear that the driver of the Honda is responsible for causing this accident. However, as the accident investigation is still underway, it is difficult to know who is at fault. Perhaps the truck was speeding or the truck driver was distracted by his cell phone or radio. Maybe the driver of the Honda turned unexpectedly in front of the truck or was reading a text instead of focusing on the safe operation of his vehicle. The only thing that is certain is that two people have been badly injured and will likely face tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills.
