Orlando police believe that illegal street racing may have been a factor in a recent hit-and-run accident that sent two people to an area hospital with serious injuries. Their investigation is still ongoing, but police say that the two victims were waiting for a bus along Millenia Boulevard when a Ford Focus struck them as they sat on a bench. The victims are a vacationing couple from England, who were taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center. Witnesses report that they saw a black Ford Focus and black Honda Accord speeding along Millenia Boulevard just before the accident occurred.
One witness said, "The black Ford Focus was in the inside lane, and I witnessed her hit the curb and quite violently bounce off the curb and cut across the Accord. Shortly thereafter, she struck the bus stop sign, as well as the bench where there were people sitting."
Witnesses report that the driver of the Accord stopped for a moment before speeding away from the accident scene.
"I walked up to them and said, ‘You just ran off from the scene of an accident; you can’t do that,’" said another witness. "Needless to say, they took off. I grabbed their tag number and gave it to the police officer."
Orlando police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident or has any information about a black Honda Accord with front-end damage to contact them.
If police determine that the two cars were racing before the accident, this will be another in a series of recent illegal street racing accidents that have injured people in the Orlando metropolitan area. Not only is street racing illegal, it is also incredibly dangerous and negligent, as these races often result in property damage, serious injuries and fatalities.
