Early in March, police working with the Melbourne Police Department began working to locate an individual who was involved in a four-car collision that took place in front of a BP Gas Station at 4502 S. Babcock Street within Melbourne. According to official reports, the initial incident took place on March 8th, 2021.
A witness to the crash told authorities that they saw a Ford Mustang as well as an Infiniti speeding down Babcock Street and attempting to pass one another. At the time they were doing this, other vehicles were also attempting to travel down the road, meaning that the drivers of the Infiniti and the Mustang, who appeared to be racing, were operating in a way that put not only themselves in danger but also numerous people around them.
It was as they were nearing the gas station that the Mustang, which had been traveling the wrong-way down South Babcock Street, attempted to merge back into their own travel lane. At this time, the driver lost control of the car, hit a curb, and overturned. The car then struck a utility pole and then crashed into a ditch. The driver of the Infiniti attempted to avoid the crashed Mustang, but this car was also traveling too quickly to be properly controlled and it crashed into a curb as well and became immobilized. During this period, two other vehicles, not believed to be racing, also crashed as a result of the chaotic driving of the people behind the wheels of the Infiniti and the Mustang.
Other witnesses to the hit-and-run collision told police that after the cars crashed, the driver of the Mustang climbed out of their vehicle and rushed over to the Infiniti. Upon reaching the Infiniti, the driver of the Mustang shouted for the Infiniti’s driver to grab a bag and run. This person was then witnessed collecting a grey backpack as well as a black bag and then the two men took off down the street.
Police were able to capture one of these individuals later that night, but it was not until the end of March that the second person was located and arrested. Both men now face numerous charges including reckless driving, fleeing the scene of a crash, and causing personal injury.
