FSU Student Killed, Struck by Car along Alafaya Trail

The Florida Highway Patrol have blocked off the northbound lanes of Alafaya Trail between Econ River Place and McCulloch Road after an accident took place early on Friday morning that resulted in the death of one person. According to the Florida Highway Patrols report, the 20-year-old Austin Ekern, an Oviedo resident, was lying prone on a Seminole County stretch of Alafaya Trail when a passing 2000 Chevrolet pickup truck came down the road and ran him over. The specific details of the scenario are murky, resulting in a large part from the current lack of knowledge held by the Florida Highway Patrol around the circumstances leading up to the accident. Fatal Car vs Motorcycle Crash in Hillsborough County

Orange County Deputy Loses Control of Car

While responding to an emergency call, a deputy with the Orange County Police Department was involved in a car accident that left her in critical condition and two other individuals with minor injuries.  Sgt. Barbecue Grill Explodes in Central Florida SUV

A Central Florida couple were injured last weekend when a barbecue grill they were transporting exploded in their rented SUV. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the couple had the grill in the back of their red Kia Sorento and were traveling near the entrance of the Central Florida Fairgrounds near Colonial Drive and Pete Parrish Boulevard.  Read the rest »

St. Petersburg Teenagers Steal Car, Three Die

At some point during either the night of Saturday or the early hours of Sunday morning, a sport utility vehicle parked in St. Petersburg was stolen by four teenagers.  The report from the St. Petersburg Police Department and the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office indicates that the vehicle was noted as being stolen shortly afterward, and the police began to search for the perpetrators.  At one point, the police found the car and attempted to pull it over, but the driver stepped hard on the gas and sped away. In an attempt to prevent a dangerous, high-speed chase, the police involved decided that chasing the vehicle would place the lives of the officers at risk and refrained from pursuing the vehicle. Newport Beach Officer Experiences Malfunction with Ford Explorer

Several months ago, we reported on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s investigation into malfunctions in Ford Explorers, a model of vehicle that sees extensive use among numerous police departments located throughout Florida.  At the time of our initial post, an officer with the Newport Beach Police Department was the only member of a law enforcement organization who experienced a malfunction with a Ford Explorer relating to the reasons that prompted the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s efforts.  Additionally, at that time Ford had not issued any recall or addressed in any way the issue with their cars. Car Crashes through Window of Titusville Hair Salon

In Titusville last Thursday, an emergency 911 call brought the Titusville Fire Department and the Titusville Police Department to 105 Seminole Avenue.  The call reported a car accident, and when the emergency services arrived they found the single car involved in the crash. While no other vehicles were involved, it seems as though the car (which the report failed to describe in any detail) did crash into a building.  More specifically, the car crashed through a large widow of Joann’s Hair Salon. Driver Overdoses, Hits Nine Vehicles on Glenmore Trail

An Orange County, Florida man was arrested after he overdosed and crashed his SUV into nine other vehicles – in four separate crash scenes. All the damaged vehicles were parked at a nearby apartment complex. The Florida Highway Patrol found the 35 year old driver passed out on the ground next to his vehicle. Read the rest »

Daytona Beach Hit-and-Run Leaves 24-Year-Old Dead

Justin Gary, a much loved 24-year-old from Daytona Beach, was riding his motorized bicycle home from his job at the Daytona Taproom last Saturday when he entered the westbound lanes of the Seabreeze Bridge.  Driving along the bridge’s shoulder, Gary was unaware that a Dodge pickup truck was veering around the road behind him, quickly approaching.   Read the rest »
