In Clermont on this past Monday an accident took place on the Florida Turnpike that resulted in two vehicles catching fire and two people being hospitalized. The report from the Florida Highway Patrol is foggy and incomplete, however it appears that one of the vehicles involved was a dump truck that was carrying a full load of gravel. The second vehicle in the incident was a semi-trailer. It is not clear whether or not the semi-trailer was hauling anything at the time of the crash or if it was empty.
The two trucks crashed due to some reason that was not included or speculated upon in the Florida Highway Patrol’s initial statement. Therefore, it could have been that the trucks were traveling in the same direction and the one sideswiped the other, or it could have been a rear-end collision that caused both trucks to veer off of the roadway. Also not included in the statement was the time of day that the collision took place, leaving us to wonder whether or not traffic was heavily affected as a result.
It does appear that no other vehicles were involved in the collision other than the two trucks.
After the initial crash took place, the drivers of both vehicles lost control of their charges and both trucks departed from the Florida Turnpike and entered the highway’s shoulder. It is not clear whether or not either of the trucks overturned, however we do know that the severity of the collision followed by the aftermath of leaving the highway caused both of the trucks to erupt into flames.
Emergency response crews from around the Clermont area rushed to the scene of the accident. Both of the drivers were pulled from the cabs, lifted into ambulances, and taken to a nearby hospital. The right lane of the turnpike was then closed off while police detectives worked to conclude an initial investigation and emergency road crews worked to clear the entire area of debris from the crash.
At the time of this writing, it is not believed that any charges have been issued against either of the truck drivers.
