A single truck crash that happened in Volusia County on the night of Saturday, May 18th, was still under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol as of later the following week. According to the initial reports from the incident, the collision is believed to have taken place sometime around 8:15 in the evening after a Ford pickup truck flipped just off of the eastern lanes of Interstate 4.
The driver of this Ford, a 30-year-old that was named in the initial report, was driving their car down I-4, close to the 131st mile marker just before the accident. It is not believed that anyone other than the 30-year-old was inside of the car at the time, although it is not clear if there were other cars around the Ford on the road.
It is not believed that the driver was attempting to turn off of I-4 onto any side roads, but something still happened whereby the driver of the Ford lost control of their vehicle. In the following moments, the Ford departed from the paved portion of the interstate. The driver was not able to regain control of the swiftly moving vehicle, although it is likely that they were attempting to by turning the wheel. It is extremely common in cases where a car is out of control for the driver to try and compensate by pulling the wheel too hard in one or another direction. When this happens, it is only a matter of time before the car begins to flip.
This was the case on the 18th of May when the 30-year-old sat inside of his Ford.
The car flipped numerous times, and the driver, who was not wearing their seat belt at the time of the incident, was violently thrown from the car. It is not known who called the emergency response crews to the scene, but when they arrived there was nothing that they could do for the badly injured individual. They were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
At the time of this writing, it is known that the investigating troopers are looking into whether or not alcohol and excessive speed played a role in the fatal incident.
