A tractor-trailer traveling down I-95 early on Thursday morning became the primary focus of an accident that resulted in the complete shut-down of all the lanes in either direction of the major traffic artery. While the complete details around the accident are not included in the initial report from the Florida Highway Patrol, it seems that the incident took place close to the county line separating Brevard County and Volusia County, in the city of Mims. Specifically, the incident occurred in the space of the highway that lies between the county line for Volusia and the exit for State Road 46.
It seems that something occurred along the highway in the dim light of morning that caused the tractor-trailer to overturn. Lying on its side, it blocked all of the southbound lanes of I-95, and in order to execute a complete initial investigation and cleanup the Florida Highway Patrol decided to shut down the entirety of the northbound lanes as well.
The report stated that the driver of the overturned truck was not injured as a result of the incident, although it is not clear whether or not any other cars were involved or if any others suffered from some sort of injury as a result of the sudden crash. From pictorial evidence, it seems that the tractor-trailer was the only vehicle involved in the accident. Due to the large and heavy nature of tractor-trailers, it is highly fortunate that no other vehicles were involved in the crash. Quite often, accidents that take place between trucks as large as the one in Thursday’s accident and other cars result in catastrophic injury or death to those in the cars.
As it was, the massive size of the truck snarled up traffic for miles in each direction until the Florida Highway Patrol could adequately clean up the scene. What made the cleanup far more arduous than it might otherwise have been was that a large amount of diesel fuel spilled from the tank as a result of its overturning. Ensuring that the roadway was clear from the toxic and highly flammable fumes was a top priority for the attending officers.
