Earlier this week, on Monday morning, a tractor-trailer was traveling down a Brevard County section of the southern lanes of Interstate 95 when it was involved in an accident that resulted in lengthy lane closures and the hospitalization of several individuals. The crash itself is still under investigation, and many of the details relating to the incident have either not been resolved or not been released, but the Florida Highway patrol and the Brevard County Fire Rescue issued statements that included the most pertinent of the known facts.
According to these statements, it was early in the morning, during the Monday rush-hour, when something occurred in the southern lanes of Interstate 95—close to the point where I-95 intersects with State Road 528—to cause a tractor-trailer to ignite in flames. The reports did not specify whether or not the flames were the result of a collision or if they happened for some other as-of-yet undisclosed reason. It is possible that the driver of the tractor-trailer lost control of their vehicle and crashed, and it is similarly possible that the tractor-trailer collided with another vehicle, as there was a second vehicle involved in the incident.
Regardless of the reasons, the destruction inflicted on both of the vehicles and the surrounding roadway caused massive lane closures along both the eastbound and westbound ramps connecting State Road 528 to southbound I-95 from between 6:00 am until 10:30 am. Officials with the Brevard County Fire Rescue reported that when they arrived at the scene of the incident the truck was fully engulfed in flames and that at least one other vehicle had been involved after it was struck by flaming particles from the truck. While it was not immediately clear if the driver of the truck was injured as a result of the accident or not, the Brevard County Fire Rescue report did indicate that the driver of the second vehicle, the one struck by debris, was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center and admitted as being a trauma alert due to the severity of the burns covering their body.
