A 76-year-old man believed to be a resident of Port Orange was driving his motorcycle down the northbound lanes of Tomoka Farms Road on Saturday, June 9th, when an incident occurred that threw him from the vehicle and caused him to sustain fatal injuries. Reports from the Florida Highway Patrol suggest that the crash took place around 10:00 in the morning, while many motorcyclists throughout Florida were enjoying the beautiful weather.
It is not clear if the motorcyclist was traveling alone or if they were in the company of other bikers, but we do know that as they were headed northbound, a Toyota car, being driven by an unknown individual, was traveling down the southern lanes.
As the driver of the Toyota neared the cyclist, something happened that caused them to depart from the southern lanes and into the northern ones, still driving in a southerly direction, so that they were suddenly driving against traffic. The Florida Highway Patrol’s report made it clear that the reasons for this are currently unknown. It is possible that the driver of the Toyota suffered from a medical emergency in the moments before they left their lane and entered the opposing one; it is also possible that they were in some way inebriated, or that something within the roadway itself caused them to lose control.
When they entered the northern lanes, the Toyota first sideswiped one motorcycle before striking another head-on. This second bike was being ridden by the previously mentioned 76-year-old individual. The force of the crash between the motorcycle and the car caused the biker to be thrown from their vehicle. During the crash and the following impact against the ground, the biker sustained injuries that the Florida Highway Patrol indicated were immediately fatal.
Emergency response teams arrived at the area shortly after the crash took place, but there was nothing they could do for the man and he was pronounced dead at the scene. It is not clear if the rider of the motorcycle that was sideswiped also suffered from injuries or if they managed to escape unharmed. Charges against the person driving the Toyota are currently pending.
