Reports emerged from Marion County on the afternoon of Friday, July 5th, regarding an accident that took place when a motorcycle collided with the rear of an SUV while traveling down State Road 40. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, where the initial reports came from, the motorcycle accident took place shortly before 2:30 in the afternoon, when a 60-year-old individual was riding their Harley-Davidson without a helmet. It is not known if this person was obeying the speed limit at the time of the crash, but it was reported that they were approaching a stoplight when the accident took place.
At this same time, a Honda Pilot was in front of the motorcyclist. Inside the Honda were three teenagers, who were passengers, and one driver who’s age was not given. The driver of the Honda approached the light and, because the light was red, began to slow down. For reasons that are not clear, the 60-year-old on the Harley-Davidson either did not see the red light or failed to notice the rate at which the Honda Pilot was slowing down. This resulted in the Harley-Davidson colliding with the rear of the Pilot with considerable force.
It appears as though the rider of the motorcycle attempted to swerve out of the way and then lost control of the bike. It is not known whether or not the rider was distracted before this occurred or if there was perhaps something wrong with their vehicle that caused them to be unable to swerve out of the way of the car. In the following moments, the motorcycle crashed to the ground and both it and the rider struck the rear of the SUV. According to the reports, when the paramedics and EMTs reached the site of the accident, it was already too late and the motorcyclist was declared dead at the scene.
Neither the driver nor any of the three passengers within the Honda Pilot were injured as a result of the collision. It is not believed that any charges are currently pending against the driver of the Honda. The incident remains under investigation.
