Reports are beginning to emerge regarding a fatal single-car crash that happened within the city of Apopka on Wednesday, March 6th. While it is not believed that more than one vehicle was involved, it does appear that at least one person was killed and another badly injured after the car they were in crashed and erupted into flames.
The exact details of what happened leading up to the incident are still under investigation, but it appears that it was very early in the morning, close to 3:00 a.m., when a white pickup truck was traveling down Apopka Boulevard. This road, while well lit, is also known for its many curves. Officers with the Apopka Police Department have issued a statement that acknowledges the potential trickiness of the curves and also encourages all drivers to proceed with caution when traveling down this particular roadway. In particular, the statement indicates that drivers must be prepared for sudden unexpected things within the roadway. What exactly was meant by this statement was not made clear, but it does suggest that the authorities currently investigating the incident are looking into whether or not something outside of the car caused the driver of the pickup truck to lose control of the vehicle.
As for what exactly happened leading up to the incident, we do not know much. Based on what the police have issued in their reports, it seems as though the driver of the white pickup truck lost control somewhere close to where Apopka Boulevard intersects with Sugar Pine Road. Unable to regain control of the vehicle, the driver of the pickup truck was helpless to stop the pickup from swerving off of the roadway and colliding with a tree standing near to the street. The force with which the truck struck the tree was severe, and the pickup truck immediately caught fire in the following moments.
The 22-year-old driver of the car, an Apopka resident, was killed in either the collision or the following fire. The passenger, who was not identified in any way, was taken from the area to the Orlando Regional Medical Center. Their current condition is not yet publicly known.
