Police in Brevard County are involved in an investigation into a fatal car accident involving a single vehicle carrying numerous individuals that took place during the middle days of February. According to the reports that we have at the time of this writing, the event was first reported close to 3:00 in the afternoon on Friday, February 19th.
Shortly before this time, a 25-year-old New York resident was behind the wheel of a sedan and traveling down Interstate 95 within Brevard County. With this individual in their car was a 21-year-old and a 27-year-old. The reports did not indicate if all three of the individuals were from the northern state or if only the driver came from New York.
The sedan was being driven down I-95 when they drew close to mile marker 208. At this time, and for reasons that remain under investigation, the 25-year-old driver lost control of the vehicle. Evidence from the crash site indicated that the driver attempted to regain control of the vehicle without success, and that the car then shot off of the asphalt and careened towards a guardrail. The driver remained unable to regain control of the vehicle during this time, and the car struck the guardrail while still traveling at an advanced rate of speed.
After striking the metal rail, the car was violently wrenched to the side, causing the car to collide heavily with the crash attenuator. This device, while likely lessening the impact the car and inhabitants would have suffered were the attenuator not in place, still caused the inhabitants of the vehicle to suffer additional injuries.
Emergency response crews were quickly called to the scene of the crash, and shortly after the car struck the guardrail, EMTs, paramedics, and members of the Florida Highway Patrol were at the scene and working to assess and treat the crash victims.
The 27-year-old passenger sustained severe injuries and they were transported to a nearby hospital. The 21-year-old passenger was also seriously injured in the crash and was also taken from the crash-site to a nearby hospital. The 25-year-old driver was injured, but the reports indicated that the investigators considered these injuries to be minor.
It was sometime after being admitted to the emergency medical center that the 27-year-old passenger was pronounced dead.
