A Palm Beach County community has been left to deal with the devastating aftermath of a tragic two-car crash that claimed the lives of five individuals and severely injured three others over Memorial Day weekend. Preliminary collision reports indicate that the fatal high-speed accident occurred early Sunday morning along Camino Real in West Boca Raton.
According to responding authorities with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, it was approximately 12:35 a.m. on Sunday, May 30th, 2021, when 18-year-old Deerfield Beach resident Ramiro Gomez was driving a 2013 Hyundai Genesis in an erratic and dangerous manner near the vicinity of Sanibel Drive and Camino Real in West Boca. Within this luxury sedan were eight other occupants of varying ages – most of whom were teenagers. As the speeding vehicle quickly approached the intersection of Camino Real and Sanibel Drive, something caused Gomez to lose control of the Hyundai and it struck a light pole then catapulted out-of-control across the grassy median and into the westbound traffic lanes before finally coming to a rest on top of a 2014 Mercedes C250 driving from the opposite direction.
Emergency response teams and technicians arrived at the scene of the accident to find two badly damaged vehicles and multiple victims suffering from a range of severe and life-threatening injuries. Bosnian-born natives Goran and Anka Zgonjanin, the 55-year-old woman and 58-year-old man within the Mercedes C250, were transported to Delray Medical Center where they both passed away shortly after arrival. Ramiro Gomez and two 13-year-old occupants of the Hyundai sustained fatal injuries in the collision and they were pronounced dead at the scene. The remaining occupants of the Hyundai were taken to area hospitals in serious condition for additional medical treatment.
Although detectives with Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office are still investigating the exact cause of this terrible collision, speed is currently believed to be a primary factor.
A GoFundMe page has been created to assist the individual families with their future funeral preparations and expenses.
