On Monday, October 19th, 2015, 84-year-old Porfirio Perez of Orlando was driving south in the northbound lanes of State Road 417. Despite attempts by a Seminole County Sheriff to alert Perez to his error and stop him from driving in the wrong direction by flashing his lights and blaring his sirens, the front corner of Perez’s 2005 PT Cruiser hit the front end of 55-year-old Kevin Cannon’s 2005 Lexus. Cannon was also carrying a 15-year-old passenger, Sean Cannon. Both drivers involved in the crash were taken to a nearby hospital for serious injuries, while the teenage passenger was (luckily) taken in for only minor injuries.
As a result of the accident, Perez has not only been hospitalized for injuries, but has also been ticketed by State troopers for his wrong-way driving. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, it was also recommended that Perez be medically re-examined. It’s possible that this recommendation was made because of the man’s age, and a suspicion that the accident may have been related to something like poor vision, mental infirmity or Perez’s suffering from a medical emergency.
Florida State troopers are still investigating the crash and trying to determine exactly what went wrong. It is as-of-yet unknown where or why Perez started driving the wrong way on SR-417. Some possibilities include medical issues (as previously mentioned), distracted driving, intoxication or vehicle malfunction. Until the troopers’ investigation is complete, however, the cause of this terrible accident will remain a mystery to the public.
