This past Friday, July 20th, an individual was driving a car with members of his family down northbound Interstate 4, inside of Volusia County, when he suffered from a heart attack. According to reports from the Volusia County Police Department, the person was behind the wheel of a Chevy SUV. Inside of the car were the driver and numerous others, all relatives.
It was close to 10:30 in the morning when the car full of people was making their way from North Carolina to somewhere unspecified inside of Florida. At a point along the roadway that was not identified in the initial report the driver of the car, a 37-year-old, began to experience massive chest pains. Before he could slow the car down or stop the vehicle, he became overcome by a heart attack. The car then left the roadway and collided with a guardrail located near to the area.
Medical teams were then called into the area in order to provide emergency assistance to the 37-year-old. It seems that despite the crash while traveling along the highway, none of the other people inside of the car suffered from any injuries.
The driver was transported from the area of the incident to Halifax Medical Center which was located nearby. Once there, doctors began to try and revive him. Sadly, the heart attack that he suffered while driving the car proved to be a powerful one and the length of time that passed before he was able to reach a hospital only exacerbated the situation. The man was declared dead at Halifax Medical Center sometime after arriving.
At the time of this writing, the cause of his death is being attributed completely to the heart attack and not the subsequent car crash.
That no one else was injured in the incident and that no other cars were involved is something of a miracle. Often, when individuals behind the wheel of a car suffer from a medical emergency their experience winds up causing massive issues—sometimes fatal ones—for the other drivers on the road. In this particular case, it seems as though the driver was able to avoid other vehicles even as he was unable to save himself.
