An early morning crash involving a bus and a car sent seven people to the hospital early Tuesday morning. A JTA bus was stopped to let a woman off on Philips Highway at the intersection with Baymeadows Way when it was rear-ended by another vehicle. It is not clear at this time why the female driver of the automobile failed to stop. All of the persons transported to the hospital received non-life threatening injuries.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the number of auto accidents in the state of Florida is on the rise, including fatality accidents. There are a number of mitigating factors in these accidents, but many minor traffic accidents have a common theme – distracted driving.
We all know that cell phone technology is here to stay. Talk a walk down any street in America and you will see many people, young and old alike, using their cell phones. With the rise of smart phones, our handheld devices have turned into mini computers, capable of handling many tasks with just the swipe of a finger. Unfortunately for a lot of folks, the lure of the cell phone, both talking and texting, may be too tempting when they get behind the wheel.
Research has shown that it also takes fractions of a second to miss cues in your surroundings leading up to an accident. The vehicle in front of you may stop, a child could run out in the road, or you may witness another accident. If your eyes are focused on your phone, even just reading a status update on Facebook or a text from a friend can prove to be a deadly actively. This is the main reason that the state of Florida has outlawed texting and driving. However, the ban on texting is only a secondary offense and the punishment for a first offense is a $30 fine. The consequences of an accident that could potentially happen while texting and driving are far greater.
