Officials from the Orange County Fire Rescue service released a statement recently regarding a frightening school bus accident that took place on Tuesday, August 14th, and resulted in the injury of several children and at least one adult. According to the official report from a spokesperson with the Orange County Public Schools, the incident happened at around 5:30 in the evening, when a school bus was driving 14 children from the Positive Pathways Transition Center towards an unspecified location.
The Florida Highway Patrol, currently the primary investigating body in the case, has yet to determine which of the two drivers involved in the incident is to blame for the crash. It seems that the school bus and a pickup truck were both travelling towards the intersection of East 13th Street and Clarcona Road and that both reached the intersection at around the same time. After reaching the stop signs, it seems that the vehicles attempted to drive through the intersection while traveling along perpendicular trajectories. As a result, the bus and the pickup truck collided with one another.
The collision was severe enough for emergency response crews to rush to the scene and begin offering medical assistance to the injured. At the time of this writing, it is known that seven of the children on the bus (no ages given) suffered from injuries as a result of the crash. The driver of the pickup truck was also treated for injuries as a result of the collision. Although the official news from the Orange County Fire Rescue indicated that none of the injuries to those involved was serious or life threatening, two of the children were taken to a nearby hospital for additional evaluation. The other five children’s parents refused the advanced medical treatment provided by the hospital.
The driver of the pickup truck was also taken to a hospital, although it is believed that his injuries were similarly benign.
Currently, the only charges filed in the case are against the driver of the pickup truck for operating a motor vehicle while possessing only a suspended license. Additional charges will likely emerge against one or the other of the drivers as the investigation deepens.
