Customers of a bank located within Central Florida were standing in line on the afternoon of Tuesday, September 8th, when an extremely unexpected car accident occurred. It is usual for people standing in a line inside of a building to look out for other individuals attempting to cut into the line. However, it is not typical for patrons standing inside of a building to pay attention to vehicles pulling into the nearby parking lot.
On the Tuesday in question, while the people in a Bradenton branch of the Bank of America waited, a 90-year-old man who was behind the wheel of his vehicle, pulled his car into the entrance of the bank looking for an open spot to park. Several parking spots located at the front of the bank were empty and it is believed that the 90-year-old was attempting to pull into one of these when the accident happened. Unfortunately, as they were attempting to hit the break, the driver accidentally pressed down hard on the gas pedal. This caused the sedan to shoot forward at an unexpected rate, crash through the large glass doors, and drive nearly 75 feet through the bank’s main area.
The sedan did finally come to a stop, but not before the driver within suffered from critical injuries. Additionally, a 57-year-old woman who was standing in line at the bank was also struck by the car. This person suffered from serious injuries as a result and was taken via ambulance from the bank to a nearby hospital. A third person, an 85-year-old customer, was also injured as a result of the car entering the building, but their injuries were deemed minor and they were not taken to a hospital. Instead, they were able to be treated at the location.
Within the sedan, in addition to the 90-year-old driver, was a 77-year-old woman. She was sitting in the car’s passenger seat when the vehicle went through the building, but she managed to escape from the entire event without suffering any injuries.
An investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol remains underway at the time of this writing. It is not known if any charges are currently pending against the driver of the sedan.
