According to recently released details surrounding a deadly auto accident in Palm Beach County, one high school student was killed and three others suffered serious injuries early Tuesday morning after a vehicle crashed into a small group of teenagers along Crestwood Boulevard.

Preliminary collision reports from authorities with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office indicate that it was shortly before 7 a.m. on March 22, 2022, when two 15-year-olds, a 16-year-old, and a 17-year-old from Royal Palm Beach High School had gathered at a bus stop located near the intersection of Crestwood Boulevard and Cypress Lake Drive. As the students waited patiently for their transportation to arrive, 57-year-old Angel Antonio Lopez was driving a 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio in the northbound direction of Crestwood Boulevard. For reasons that are unknown at this time, Lopez lost control of his luxury vehicle, drove onto the street’s sidewalk, and crashed into the group of young adults.

Local emergency response teams and officers with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the scene of the car vs. pedestrian accident almost immediately after 9-1-1 operators received the first set of distress calls reporting the incident. Upon their arrival at the crash site, they quickly realized that the four teenagers had all sustained severe, life-threatening injuries during the collision. One victim was transported to HCA Florida Palms West Hospital and the three other students were taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center. Sadly, 15-year-old Tiana Johnson was unable to survive her injuries and she passed away the next morning. The other 15-year-old is currently in critical condition, while the other two high schoolers are said to be in serious condition.

The 57-year-old driver of the Alfa Romeo sustained minor injuries during the incident but refused medical attention.

It has been one of the busiest unsafe intersections in this area. And nothing got done about it. We have students going to school, we have buses coming in. It’s unacceptable that this happened,” said a local resident in a statement to the press.

This case is under investigation by traffic homicide detectives with Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. Official charges against 57-year-old Angel Antonio Lopez are pending.

Grief counselors and a therapy dog have been made available at Royal Palm Beach High School for anyone who needs help dealing with this tragic accident.
