Officials with the Florida Highway Patrol working within Marion County have issued a statement regarding a fatal auto accident that took place along U.S. 441 on Saturday, December 29th. The reports indicate that the incident happened shortly after midnight, and that it involved at least three separate vehicles.
The first of these, a 1999 GMC Jimmy, was being driven down the eastern lanes of Southeast 132nd State Road by a 31-year-old individual. When they reached the intersection of Southeast 132nd State Road and U.S. 441, the driver attempted to make a right turn onto the highway. For reasons that are not clear, it was while this driver was navigating this curve that they lost control of their vehicle. In the following moments, the 31-year-old was thrown from the car and into one of the outside travel lanes of the road down which he was traveling.
At this time, two different cars headed northbound on U.S. 441 reached the area of the crash. For reasons that are also not clear, both of these drivers failed to notice the crashed vehicle or the person lying in the middle of the road. One after the other, both of these cars ran over the prone individual, inflicting on him injuries that were far more severe than the initial wounds he received after being ejected from the vehicle.
The stories from the news agencies writing reports on this incident failed to state whether or not either of the drivers remained at the scene of the incident after colliding with the person lying on the ground. We do know that someone called 9-1-1 after the incident happened, and soon there were numerous first responder teams including paramedics and EMTs at the scene to tend to the badly injured individual. Unfortunately, the extent of the injuries that this person sustained as a result of the initial collision and the subsequent impacts with the two cars was far greater than any medical attention could fix. They were transported from the initial location of the crash to Ocala Regional Medical Center, but there they were ultimately pronounced dead.
Currently, there are no charges pending in this incident, although it does remain under investigation.
