A dump truck struck two vehicles and injured four people, two of them critically, in a recent accident in Volusia County. Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) accident investigators say that the 33-year-old driver of the dump truck was driving northbound on State Road 415 just after noon one recent day when he failed to notice that traffic in front of him had slowed. FHP troopers say the driver first struck the rear of a Kia passenger car driven by a 63-year-old Edgewater man and then continued into the northbound lanes, where he struck a Nissan Maxima. After striking the Nissan, the truck continued on the shoulder for a short distance, where it struck and destroyed several mailboxes and a telephone pole.
The driver of the Nissan, a 51-year-old Port Orange woman and her passenger, a 73-year-old Daytona Beach woman were both rushed to Halifax Health Center in Daytona Beach, where both received treatment for critical injuries. The driver and passenger of the Kia were taken to area hospitals and treated for minor injuries. The FHP accident investigation is still ongoing, but troopers said that the driver of the dump truck would be charged with careless driving and other violations.
Today’s passenger vehicles have many safety features and are built to withstand damage and protect passengers in the event of a collision, but no matter how well built they may be, none can fully protect passengers from a truck weighing tens of thousands of pounds. All drivers have a responsibility to operate their vehicles in a safe manner, but drivers of heavy trucks must exercise extra care to provide proper spacing between their vehicles and the smaller vehicles around them. Since he was issued a ticket for careless driving and may face additional charges, it is clear that this driver was negligent in operating his vehicle safely.
