As local Floridians were heading to school and work during the early morning hours of March 5th, 2021, troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol were responding to the scene of a fatal rollover collision which claimed the lives of two individuals and injured two others. According to the preliminary accident reports, the incident occurred along an Interstate 95 exit ramp near Hollywood Boulevard in Broward County.
It was approximately 6:00 a.m. when law enforcement officials working with the Hollywood Police Department and the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) were first notified of a potentially deadly rollover accident involving multiple vehicles along a southbound I-95 off-ramp to Hollywood Boulevard. A report from FHP Lt. Yanko Reyes indicated that one vehicle was attempting to safely exit the interstate at this interchange, however, the driver failed to maintain control of his vehicle and they crashed into another car in the process. Due to the high velocity impact from this collision, one vehicle rolled violently down a cement embankment before coming to a stop underneath the interstate’s overpass. The second vehicle ended up pinned against one of the numerous cement utility poles that line the expansive roadway.
As Broward County authorities and medical teams arrived at the crash site and rushed to aid the injured victims, it was discovered that the male and female occupants from the vehicle that did not initiate the collision, were suffering from serious, life-threatening injuries and they were immediately taken to a local hospital. Sadly, the 64-year-old woman and 62-year-old man were unable to survive the severity of their injuries and they both passed away shortly after arriving at the emergency room. Their identities are being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin. The two men from the other vehicle were also transported to the hospital and have been reported to be in critical condition at the time of this writing.
At some point during this deadly accident, authorities were forced to use the Jaws of Life to extract the individuals from the mangled metal of their vehicles. Additionally, an SUV that was in close proximity to the collision when it occurred sustained cosmetic damages but no one within the vehicle was injured. This incident is still under investigation.
