Reports are just beginning to emerge from the Melbourne Police Department regarding a bicycle accident which took place within that city early on the morning of Friday, April 5th. According to these early reports, the incident in question involves a bicycle and at least one car, although the full details on what happened and how many total vehicles were involved are still not publicly available.
Speed Limit Reduction along State Road 50 after Death of Cyclist
Five months ago, a 49-year-old was riding a bicycle to work along State Road 50 in Orange County when he was struck by a passing motorist. The injuries that this person sustained as a result of this bicycle accident were extremely serious, and despite the best efforts of the first responders and other medical staff, the cyclist died as a result of the crash.
Florida Bike Accidents More Common In Tourist Season
A new report from the Marco Island Police Department shows that there were 11 accidents between cars and bicyclists in 2014, and all of them happened in the months between January and March. Police captain David Baer said increased population and traffic during these tourist-heavy months can explain the accidents.

Man Hospitalized for Severe Head Trauma After Florida Bicycle Accident
A man riding his bicycle in Ponte Vedra Beach is listed in very critical condition after he was struck by a truck recently near the intersection of State Road A1A and Dolphin Boulevard. Florida Highway Patrol troopers say that the 56-year-old victim was southbound in the bike lane of S.R. A1A when the accident occurred. They say that a Ford truck driven by a 43-year-old man, also from Ponte Vedra Beach, was heading east on Dolphin Boulevard and attempting to turn north onto S.R. A1A when he drove into the path of the bicyclist.
U of F Student Critically Injured in Hit-and-Run Bicycle Accident
A University of Florida student is receiving care at Shands at the University of Florida and hospitalized in extremely critical condition after she was struck and injured in a recent hit-and-run bicycle accident. Accident investigators say that the 21-year-old woman was riding her bike near Southwest 16th Avenue near Archer Road when she was struck by a driver who fled the accident scene without stopping to help. She is being treated for severe head trauma, a broken arm and two broken legs, according to a Gainesville Police officer. He reports that a vehicle believed to be involved in the accident has been recovered, but no arrest has been made in connection with the incident.
Florida Bicycle Accident Kills Lifelong Public Servant
Recently, a SUV struck and killed LeRoy Collins Jr., a retired rear admiral and submariner in the U.S. Navy, department head for Governor Charlie Crist and son of former Florida Governor LeRoy Collins. Collins, 75, was riding his bike at 6 a.m. one morning in Tampa when the SUV struck him. Collins was Gov. Crist’s Executive Director of the Department of Veterans Affairs. Crist interrupted a Cabinet meeting in the Capitol to make the announcement, drawing audible gasps from many in attendance.
