A rear-end collision between a car and a motorcycle late on Saturday morning in Daytona has left one individual hospitalized and in critical condition. According to authorities with the South Daytona Police Department, the incident occurred just after 11:00 in the morning, along an unnamed roadway and in unknown conditions. What we do know is that the accident involved a motorcycle and a sedan. The motorcycle was on the road behind the sedan when, for reasons that are not clear, it crashed into the rear of the car.
Witnesses to the scene describe how, after the collision, the individual on the motorcycle lost control of their vehicle and crashed. The violence of the crash caused the motorcycle to ignite in flames. These flames also jumped to the person riding the motorcycle. Witnesses acted quickly and rushed to the burning person to extinguish the flames before the fire completely consumed the individual. It is believed that the motorcycle’s rider was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident, a fact which likely prevented them from dying at the scene of the accident.
As it is, paramedics and first-responders who arrived at the scene shortly after the incident occurred, reported that the motorcyclist was in serious condition. A helicopter was called in and the individual was flown to a nearby hospital, although the precise hospital was not indicated in the initial incident report. We do know that when the motorcyclist arrived at the hospital they were described on their admittance papers as being in critical condition. As of this moment, no further information regarding their condition or stability has been released.
The name of the sedan’s driver has also not yet been released, although it does not seem as though they suffered from any injures as a result of the accident.
The crash is still under investigation by the South Daytona Police Department, and anyone who may have information regarding the circumstances that led to the crash or the events of the crash itself is encouraged to reach out to the South Daytona Police officer Sgt. Bryan Craig.
