Orlando motorcycle accident lawyer James O. Cunningham is urging all motorcyclists to ride defensively and exercise extra care after the second fatal accident within nearly a week on Curry Ford Road. On November 10, a 22-year-old man was killed when a sport utility vehicle violated his right of way by turning into his path. The most recent accident occurred around 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 18 when a 20-year-old rider was traveling east on Curry Ford Road and was cut off by a Hyundai Electra driven by a 66-year-old Orlando woman. Florida Highway Patrol troopers investigating the accident say that the woman was attempting to turn left from Pinebranch Drive onto Curry Ford when she turned directly into the motorcyclist’s path.
The rider had no time to react and collided with the Hyundai, throwing him from his bike and fatally injuring him. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Firefighters had to use saws and hydraulic equipment to remove the roof and driver’s side door of the Hyundai to extract the driver, who was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center where she is listed in stable condition. The fatal accident closed Curry Ford Road in both directions for nearly two hours while officers conducted their accident investigation and debris was cleared from the roadway.
Regular readers of this blog know that both of these scenarios are tragically common. Most motorcycle accidents in the Orlando area are caused by drivers who fail to notice riders and pull out directly in front of them, giving them little or no time to react and take evasive action. There are many different factors that contribute to motorcycle accidents, but some of the most common causes include these:
- Drivers who talk and/or text on their cell phones
- Drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol
- Speeding
- Following too closely
- Driving too fast for conditions
- Disobeying a traffic signal
- Drivers who fail to look both ways before pulling out into traffic
While negligent riders cause some motorcycle accidents in our area, reckless drivers cause the vast majority of accidents that injure and kill riders.
