Earlier this month, on a Tuesday, an unnamed motorcyclist was driving their bike down the western lane of Lake Underhill Road in Orange County when they began traveling through a residential area. Driveways connected to the road on both sides, which creates a somewhat tricky situation as both the people on the road and the people attempting to leave their homes must remain aware of the traffic flow.
It was close to 3:20 in the afternoon as the biker approached the intersection of Lake Underhill Road and Alafaya Trail. At the same time, a Kia van was being driven out of a home’s driveway. The driveway, like many of the others in the area, connected to Lake Underhill Road. It is not clear if the driver of the van did not see the motorcycle or if they believed that there was more space between the two vehicles. Either way, as the Kia pulled out of the driveway in an attempt to make a left turn into the eastern lane of Lake Underhill Road, it pulled directly into the path of the motorcycle.
The motorcycle’s operator attempted to avoid the oncoming van, but their attempts were unsuccessful. The motorcycle collided with the van’s driver side and the bike’s rider was violently thrown off of the vehicle. It was highly fortunate that the driver of the motorcycle was wearing a helmet, otherwise the story might have ended more tragically than it does.
Even with the protection of the helmet, the biker sustained critical injuries that resulted in them being rushed to a nearby hospital. The initial report did not indicate if it was believed that the biker would recover from their injuries or if they were still in critical condition. We do know that the driver of the van was not injured in the incident, a fact that is congruent with other accidents between motorcycles and any larger vehicle.
At the time of this writing, the crash is still under investigation as the Florida Highway Patrol puts all existing facts together to create a comprehensive picture of the events. Charges are currently pending against the driver of the Kia.
