A motorcyclist is listed in critical condition with life-threatening injuries after a recent motorcycle accident in Lakeland. Police say that the motorcyclist was injured when he tried to avoid striking a car that had pulled out in front of him on Lakeland Hills Boulevard. According to the Lakeland Police report, the 52-year-old victim was northbound in the inside lane of Lakeland Hills Boulevard when a car driven by a 24-year-old woman pulled directly into his path while she tried to make a left turn onto the boulevard.
The rider slammed on his brakes in an attempt to avoid colliding with the car and lost control of his bike. When police arrived at the accident scene, they found the victim lying on the northbound side of the boulevard bleeding profusely. They say that the rider avoided hitting the woman’s Volkswagen, but suffered grave injuries when he struck the roadway. The man was rushed to Lakeland Regional Medical Center, where he is receiving treatment for a variety of serious injuries. The driver of the Volkswagen received a ticket for violating the rider’s right of way, and Lakeland police expect to file additional charges against her.
Regular readers of this blog know that this motorcycle accident scenario is sadly typical. Many of Florida’s motorcycle accidents are caused by drivers who fail to see motorcyclists and violate their right of way by cutting them off and given them little or no time to avoid a collision. It’s a rider’s worst nightmare, and few riders in our state haven’t had at least one close call with a negligent driver pulling out in front of them. It happens to riders of all ages and skill levels, and these accidents kill at least 500 motorcyclists every year in our state and injure thousands more.
