An accident Thursday afternoon has resulted in the death of a 19-year-old Lake Mary resident. At around 2:40 p.m., Ian Maggard was traveling on Lake Way Road when a 2013 Prius attempted to make a left hand turn in front of him. Maggard saw the Prius begin to turn and laid down his 2008 Kawasaki motorcycle on its side before slamming into the passenger side of the Prius.
The driver of the Prius has been identified as Bi Dong, 35, of Sanford, who was uninjured in the accident. Maggard was rushed to Orlando Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Although Maggard was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident it was not enough to save his life. There has been speculation as to the cause of the accident but Florida Highway Patrol investigators have cautioned that it is too soon in the investigation to make a final decision. No citations have been issues at this time.
Tuesday’s incident is a stark reminder that the time of year when motorcycle enthusiasts take to the road is in full swing. Although the state of Florida has temperatures that are warm enough for riding year-round, many motorcyclists wait until late spring to pull them out of the garage. Because more motorcyclists on the road, drivers should be especially vigilant of their surroundings, and to always look twice between making any sudden turns or lane changes.
As every motorcyclist knows, they also need to be vigilant while sharing the road with other drivers. Because motorcycles are much smaller, drivers may not see them in their side or rear view mirrors. Or, they may not notice a motorcyclist approaching them in oncoming traffic. Most veteran riders will tell you that it is best not to engage in reckless driving or speed while on a motorcycle because of the danger that other drivers or even road conditions can present. Even the most alert biker sometimes cannot avoid an accident that may not be his or her fault.
