A terrible collision that took place close to Tampa in Hillsborough County resulted in massive lane closures and the death of an individual from Thonotosassa. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the fatal motorcycle accident took place along U.S. 92 and involved a 36-year-old Thonotosassa resident as well as a 2005 Chevrolet. The identity of the Chevrolet’s driver was not included in the report.
What we know is that that the man from Thonotosassa was driving a 2006 Kawasaki Ninja down the eastern lanes of U.S. 92. It is not clear how this was ascertained, but the troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol believe strongly that the motorcyclist was traveling at an advanced rate of speed. In an attempt to pass the other cars that were also traveling down U.S. 92’s eastern lanes, the driver of the Ninja began driving in the western lanes.
It is not known if the driver of the Chevrolet saw the motorcycle or if either of the two vehicles made an attempt to avoid one another. What is clear is that the motorcycle struck the Chevrolet head-on, flipped, and threw the man from Thonotosassa across the road. The man was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident, and this fact likely contributed to the resulting fatal injuries.
After 9-1-1 was called, numerous emergency response crews rushed to the area. These included paramedics and EMTs who began to try and revive the motorcyclist. Despite their efforts, there was nothing that could be done to help the gravely wounded man and he was declared dead at the scene of the accident. While troopers conducted a preliminary investigation, both the eastern and western lanes of U.S. 92 were shut down. This lasted for close to five hours, until 11:30 in the morning.
At the time of this writing, it is not believed that alcohol has anything to do with the accident, but excessive speed is being treated as having played an outsized role in the collision.
The driver of the Chevrolet was not injured in the crash, and it is not believed that any other vehicles were involved.
