Orlando personal injury lawyer James O. Cunningham would like to remind readers that they could face serious felony hit-and-run charges even when they flee from an accident that they did not cause. A recent hit-and-run accident involving a Umatilla woman illustrates this point very well.
Officials with the Lake County Sheriff’s Office have pressed charges against the 56-year-old woman in connection with a hit-and-run accident in Eustis. They report that the woman had stopped her Ford pickup truck behind a school bus as it unloaded passengers on State Road 19 and Haselton Road when her truck was struck from behind by a man on a Yamaha motorcycle. Sheriff’s deputies report that the woman initially got out of her truck to check on the injured rider, a 46-year-old Umatilla man, who had been ejected from his motorcycle by the impact. Officer Robert Simken issued a statement, which said that the woman did not have a valid driver’s license and got back into her truck to get away from the accident scene.
"After observing his condition, she returned to her vehicle and fled the scene of the crash," Simken said.
Lake County Sheriff’s deputies tracked the woman to her Umatilla address after witnesses noted her license plate number as she sped away. Simken also said that the motorcycle rider, who was not wearing a helmet and did not have a valid motorcycle license, was at fault for the accident and died at the scene.
