An Orlando chiropractor has been charged with leaving the scene of a fatal motorcycle accident in February that claimed the life of a Fort Myers woman. The Lake Mary doctor who describes himself as one of Central Florida’s top doctors was booked into the Seminole County jail recently but released shortly thereafter on $50,000 bail for his involvement in the Feb. 26 hit-and-run motorcycle accident that killed the 50-year-old rider.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the victim was riding her Harley-Davidson motorcycle on State Road 415 in rural Volusia County during a rainstorm when a late-model Infiniti QX-56 struck her from behind. The force of the impact knocked the victim into oncoming traffic, where she was struck by two more vehicles that did not have time to avoid striking her. The victim’s husband was riding his motorcycle near his wife when he witnessed the accident. After the Infiniti SUV struck the victim, it sped away from the accident scene without stopping to render aid.
Investigators learned that shortly after the accident, the doctor drove another 12 miles to a Deltona Save-a-Lot store on Howland Boulevard, where he phoned a friend. Officers say the friend picked up the doctor and drove him to his home in Heathrow in Seminole County.
Officers used cell phone records and transmission towers to track the chiropractor’s activities before the accident and found that he had spent some time at the Gnarley Surf Bar & Grill in New Smyrna Beach. After leaving the restaurant, he traveled west on State Road 44 before turning onto S.R. 415 and then traveling on to Deltona. If convicted, the chiropractor could receive up to 30 years in prison.
Causing an accident and then leaving the scene without rendering assistance to the injured is the very definition of negligence, and the doctor could face wrongful death charges in addition to the charges of leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
