An incident that took place in Apopka this past Friday left police with the Apopka Police Department searching for a hit-and-run driver who ran a stop sign, struck a vehicle, and very nearly collided with a house. Initial reports from the Apopka Police Department indicate that the incident happened sometime in the afternoon of Friday, July 20th, and that they began at a stop sign located along Hawthorne Avenue.
A person driving a pickup truck reached the stop sign at the same time as the driver now being sought by police. After stopping, the pickup truck then continued through the intersection. The other car then approached, failed to regard the stop sign, and began speeding through the intersection. This car then struck the pickup truck, causing massive amounts of damage to both vehicles.
The driver of the pickup truck told reporters that the impact caused both cars to spin out of control. The car that ran the stop sign spun so far out of the intersection that they began to close in on a home nearby. According to the report, the out-of-control vehicle came within several inches of striking the home.
When the car came to a stop, the driver exited. The driver of the other car, the one that had stopped at the sign, also exited their vehicle. Then the driver of the first car then simply ran away. The report indicated that there was some surprise on the part of the other people involved as this person sprang out of their car and was last seen bolting down a residential street.
Witnesses from the homes the man ran past on his way down the road told authorities that there was blood streaming down his face and that he was yelling “I can’t go to jail” over and over again as he ran.
Apopka Police are now searching for the man behind the crash and are looking for any help that might be available from witnesses or others connected with the person who ran the stop sign and then fled from the area.
It is not known if the driver of the second vehicle suffered from any injuries in the incident.
