A 21-year-old was hospitalized after a hit-and-run accident that happened along Alafaya Trail on Saturday, October 6th. According to reports from the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident took place very late at night or early on Sunday morning.
The 21-year-old, who had recently graduated with a bachelor of science in legal studies, was walking along the western side of Alafaya Trail close to midnight when they decided to attempt to cross to the eastern side. At this point, they were close to the intersection of Alafaya Trail and Strategy Boulevard, an area that is also right beside the campus for the University of Central Florida.
Reports state that the pedestrian was inside of a crossing walk at the time of the incident, however it is believed that they were not crossing when the walk sign was illuminated. This means that the cars coming down Alafaya Trail had a green light, leading to some speculation around who was at fault for the initial collision.
At the same time when the pedestrian was crossing the roadway, a car came down Alafaya Trail and approached the light. The car either did not see the pedestrian or did not believe that they were within striking distance. The car struck the pedestrian and threw them to the ground with severe injuries. Then the driver of the car stepped on the gas and fled from the scene.
EMTs and paramedics arrived to tend to the badly injured person, and the pedestrian was rushed from the crash location to Orlando Regional Medical Center. At the time of this writing, it is not known if they are still in critical condition or if they were able to be stabilized.
While the car involved did flee from the scene, it is believed that troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol were able to locate it only a day later, on Monday. No information regarding the driver of the car has yet been released to the public, and it is likely that none will until a complete criminal investigation is concluded.
The incident where this hit-and-run took place is only two miles away from where a 13-year-old child was struck and critically injured only a few weeks before.
