An unexplained accident early Sunday morning has claimed the life of a 21-year-old Orlando woman. According to Florida Highway Patrol, a vehicle was traveling eastbound along State Road 408 when it left the road and traveled across all lanes of traffic before dropping into a retention pond. According to an eyewitness, it did not appear that the driver slowed for the exit ramp and drove straight across all lanes of traffic on Alafaya Trail. The car entered the pond and immediately sank. The driver was unable to get out of the car in time, and ultimately drowned.
The accident is still under investigation at this time, and investigators have not said whether they believe speed or a vehicle malfunction was a factor in the accident. From the damage on the front end of the car, witnesses speculated that perhaps the car was traveling very quickly into the pond. However, it should be pointed out some damage may have been pre-existing. It took rescue workers nearly four hours to retrieve the vehicle from the water.
When accidents such as this occur, there are always may unanswered questions for the families of the victims. It was early in the morning, did the driver fall asleep? Was there something that prevented him or her from stopping as they normally would have for traffic signals or other motorists?
Many of these questions can be answering by the police investigation of the accident scene and eyewitness accounts. And sometimes, the answers point to causes which may have been beyond the victim’s control. These types of situation are extremely frustrating and saddening for the families that have lost so much. To learn that someone you love has been severely injured or died through no fault of their own leaves a huge hole in many hearts.
