A car accident that took place within the city of DeLand resulted in one person being rushed to the hospital for treatment of injuries that were deemed critical. At the time of this writing, much of the information relating to the accident remains obscured within the investigative efforts of the DeLand Police Department, but some reports have been issued from both this entity and various news outlets that provide some detail on what exactly happened to cause the incident.
It was shortly after 6:15 when a person driving a red car was attempting to turn off of either South Amelia Avenue or East Volusia Avenue into the parking lot of the Sanborn Center within DeLand. In order to accomplish this turn, the driver of the car needed to cross from the northbound lanes and over the southbound lanes. At this same time, a green truck approached the rear of the red car, traveling in the northbound lanes of the same road. For reasons that are not clear, the driver of the truck either failed to see that the red car was stopped or didn’t see that this car was turning, or perhaps they simply believed that they could avoid striking the car if they moved fast enough.
As the driver of the red car began to try and make the turn, the driver of the green truck tried to pass the red car on the left, using the temporarily vacant southbound lane as its own lane of travel. Unfortunately, this put the green truck on a collision course with the very car they were trying to pass, as the driver of the red car was attempting to turn across the southbound lanes in order to enter the Sanborn Center.
The green truck had almost made it by, but then the front of the red car struck the back right passenger side of the truck, causing the driver of the truck to lose control of his vehicle. As this driver grappled with their steering wheel, the truck careened around the road, eventually slamming into a large power pole in the area. When emergency response crews reached the scene, they rushed the individual inside of the truck to Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford for treatment of injuries deemed to be critical.
No one who was inside of the red car was injured as a result of the crash.
