An accident just after midnight Tuesday morning has claimed the lives of three young Florida residents. Police say that 27-year-old Laura Hopkins was attempting to turn left off of State Road 436 onto Winter Woods Boulevard when her vehicle was struck by another vehicle driven by 29-year-old Kyle Mowery. Hopkins also had a passenger in her vehicle at the time of the incident, 22-year-old Erica Jusino. The two women were on their way to a friend’s house of the time of the accident.
Many citizens stopped to help as they came upon the horrific scene. Among the first people to stop and administer aid were a Lake Mary firefighter and an off-duty Sanford police officer. The first responders attempted to stabilize the women, who were taken to the Orlando Regional Medical Center where they later died from their injuries. Mowery was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Investigators have not identified a specific cause of the accident at this time, however they are saying that it may be speed-related.
It is unclear at this time why Hopkins may have turned in front of on-coming traffic. The incident happened around 1:00 am, so visibility may have been a factor. According to Hopkins’ boyfriend, she had forgotten her wallet and was turning around to head home to get it, as she had phoned him only a short time before the incident. It’s possible that Hopkins may have been in a hurry and did not correctly gauge the speed of the oncoming vehicle.
Regardless of the cause, Tuesday’s accident had a very tragic outcome for three families. The emotional pain may never go away for these people. All three victims were young, and had their whole lives ahead of them – cut short in a moment early Tuesday morning. They leave behind questions and responsibilities for the survivors, people who may have counted on them for stability and financial support. Now, the families must go forward without them, and that is where we come in. At the Law Offices of James O. Cunningham, our legal advisors have a great amount of knowledge in auto accidents.
