Osceola County deputies arrested three Kissimmee men for street racing early one recent Sunday morning and booked them into the Osceola County jail. According to arrest reports, the three men, ages 19, 20 and 35, were each driving their own cars on Orange Blossom Trail at speeds over 111 mph in a 50 mph zone. Deputies report that they impounded a black BMW sedan, a blue Ford Mustang and a blue Mitsubishi Lancer after arresting the drivers. They say that the men were uncooperative during their arrests and have been charged with racing on a highway and reckless driving.
This incident is the latest in a series of street racing incidents that often end in tragedy, especially for spectators who often gather at the sides of Florida roadways to watch the racing. The drivers participating in these illegal races frequently lose control of their cars and collide with spectators, causing serious and often fatal injuries. According to figures from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, from 2001 to 2008, more than 50 people in Florida and 1,000 across the U.S. were killed in street racing accidents. In Oct. 2011, Florida lawmakers toughened state laws, increasing fines for street racers up to $5,000 for each arrest.
Sadly, the prospect of tougher fines has not deterred many drivers from street racing, despite authorities in many Florida communities allowing drivers to race on designated tracks at certain times of the week. Street racing is grossly reckless and negligent and people injured by street racers have a right to seek damages against these drivers to recoup medical expenses, lost wages, compensation for pain and suffering and other damages.
