Study Finds Accidents at Red Lights in Kissimmee Increase after Cameras Installed

Recent statistics on the number of crashes in Kissimmee point to the conclusion that overall camera-enforced red lights do not decrease the number of crashes at some of the busiest intersections in Osceola County. Since 2011, the number of vehicle crashes, especially rear-end collisions, has risen.

Of the ten most dangerous intersections in Kissimmee, six of them are camera enforced. While the severity of these incidents has decreased, the total number has either stayed consistently about the same from 2011 when the cameras were installed, or increased. Many local residents attribute this to the sudden stops persons unfamiliar with the area may make when they realize they are about to run the red light. In fear of receiving a ticket attached to their photos, they often will suddenly brake and cause a rear-end collision.

Because Kissimmee is a popular vacation destination for many families, they are many tourists that visit Kissimmee every year. This high density of out of town drivers, coupled with intersections that could be more clearly marked, pose a very real and dangerous threat to area motorists.
