Rainy weather is being blamed for a recent Orlando motor vehicle accident that sliced a car in half. According to Melbourne, Florida police, the single-car crash happened around 4:00 pm on NASA Boulevard near the Orlando – Melbourne International Airport. The police believe that the rain-covered roads caused the vehicle to hydroplane before hitting a pole nearby Eddie Allen Road. Paramedics rushed to the scene and took the victim, who was conscious, to the hospital. Nobody else is reported to having been injuring during the incident.
As a result of Florida’s rainy season, hydroplaning is a common occurrence on Orlando-area roads. Hydroplaning happens when large amounts of water is displaced under the vehicle, literally dragging the vehicle with the flow of water. Hydroplaning can happen as a result of poorly designed roads or drainage, badly laid pavement or unmaintained roads. The way one drives can also be a contributing cause to hydroplaning. For example, driving too fast in wet conditions, having an unsafe tire tread depth or overcorrecting can all cause the vehicle to hydroplane off the road.
Although single vehicle hydroplaning accidents often result in injuries, it can be difficult to ‘blame’ another party for the accident, thus limiting one’s ability to seek compensation via a personal injury lawsuit. That being said, however, there are scenarios where hydroplaning is caused by the negligence – or partial negligence – of another party. For example, a poorly maintained or designed road or drainage system could cause your vehicle to hydroplane. Such factors could be considered negligent actions, thus triggering grounds for a personal injury claim against the party responsible for the roads or drains.
If you or a loved one were injured in Florida due to hydroplaning and you think the cause of the hydroplaning was a defect in the road, then you could have grounds to seek compensation for your injuries.
