A small accident on U.S. 98 in Pensacola caused some slight delays this afternoon, when a small SUV in the furthest right lane was stopped waiting to turn right. Another vehicle approached the intersection in the outside lane and attempted to turn right at the same time. The vehicles crashed when the front left of the SUV collided with the right front side of the other vehicle as they both attempted to negotiate the turn. The accident resulted in only minor injuries to both parties and both declined to be transported to area health centers for examination.
This story is good news for both drivers, in that neither of the drivers, nor their vehicles, were severely injured in this accident. Although it may be costly from a perspective of money spent for repairs and lost time as vehicles are out of commission, it was very cheap when the human costs are considered. For many victims of accidents on Florida’s road and highways, the cost is often much higher.
In 2013, the most recent year that data is available, there were over 300,000 auto accidents in the state of Florida. This is almost a 13% increase in the number of crashes that occurred in 2012. Fortunately, this same increase in accidents also saw a decrease in the number of vehicle crash-related fatalities in the state of Florida – 2,224 down from 2,255 in 2013. However, this number is still far too high. When we consider that there are approximately 15 million licensed drivers in the state of Florida, each driver has a 2% chance of being involved in an accident daily in the state of Florida. This means that for every 100 cars on the road, 2 will be involved in an accident.
Some vehicle accidents, such as the one referenced above, are very minor. But some are much more horrific and severe, and the victims they leave behind can be serious injured or killed. For the families of these victims, the pain never goes away. If you or someone you love has been involved in an accident on Florida roads, please contact the Law Offices of James O.
