East of Orlando, at Colonial Drive and Old Cheney, an unnamed 47-year-old man was driving a 1999 Mercedes-Benz at around 3:00 on Monday morning when he lost control and crashed into a light pole. After the collision with the pole, the car was propelled into a nearby auto mall, spraying debris into the eight cars parked there and damaging them all. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the left side of the Mercedes impacted the pole with enough force to break the car into two pieces, both of which then careened into the auto mall’s parking lot.
As a result of the devastating impact, the individual behind the wheel of the car was killed. His name has not been released yet, although it is not known if this is the request of his next of kin or because the authorities have not yet been able to contact any living relatives.
The causes behind the accident are not yet known, and the authorities are still attempting to unravel the situation. The owner of the auto mall, Mike Freeman, claims that after carefully examining the street, he and the Orlando Police Department concluded that the driver of the car never attempted to employ his breaks, and that the road before the light pole shows now sign of tire marks or other such indicators that might suggest that the driver tried to avoid the pole. It is extremely fortunate that the accident took place at such an early time, when no one other than the driver of the Mercedes was around to become involved.
While the Orlando Police Department investigates the situation they will be looking into whether or not drugs or alcohol may have played a role in the crash. As this was the Sunday leading into Memorial Day, it is not unreasonable to suspect that substances may have played a role in this accident. In fact, there is evidence compiled by the ValuePenguin website to suggest that Memorial Day weekend is the most dangerous weekend for drivers and that over 40% of the accidents that take place on this particular weekend are the result of drunk drivers.
