Florida Highway Patrol troopers investigating a recent fatal accident near Oviedo say that charges are pending against the 15-year-old driver who caused the accident and his mother, who was riding in the car when the accident occurred. Troopers say that the teen driver ran a red light at the intersection of Red Bug Lake Road and State Road 426 around 12:20 p.m. They report that the boy and his 32-year-old mother were traveling eastbound in a 1999 Ford SUV on Red Bug Lake Road when he drove through a red light at S.R. 426.
Witnesses said that as the boy entered the intersection, he struck a 2004 Buick driven by a 45-year-old Oviedo woman. The boy’s SUV struck passenger side of the Buick, fatally injuring the driver and critically injuring her 68-year-old mother. The collision caused the Buick to strike a 2014 Nissan XTerra, causing it to flip onto its top and resulting in minor injuries to the occupants. The driver of the Buick was rushed to the emergency room at Central Florida Regional Hospital and was transferred to Orlando Regional Medical Center in Orlando, where she died from her injuries. Her mother was taken to an unnamed area hospital, where she is listed in critical condition with undisclosed injuries.
Troopers do not yet know why the teen was driving the SUV instead of his mother, but it is likely that they will find that his mother was negligent in allowing an inexperienced and unlicensed driver to drive.
