Two people were killed over the weekend following a head-on collision on State Road 407 and Interstate 95. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 55-year-old male was traveling northbound on State Road 407 in his 2016 Ford Edge. For a yet unknown reason, the vehicle moved into the southbound lanes, where it hit an oncoming 2000 Buick head on. In addition to a 55-year-old male driver, the Buick had two female passengers, ages 55 and 57.
The driver of the Ford Edge was transported to Parrish Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead. The 55-year-old passenger in the Buick was also killed, while the 57-year-old passenger was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center and is being treated for serious injuries.
Head-on collisions such as the one here are one of the most dangerous types of car accidents and the most likely to result in death or serious injuries. This is because when two cars, both traveling at substantial speeds, collide head on, the impact is essentially doubled. Furthermore, when the driver and passengers are in the front seat, they are placed close to the point of impact, leading to more substantial injuries, such as traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, internal organ damage, broken bones and fractures. Even though head-on collisions only make up about 2% of all motor vehicle accidents, they are the cause of nearly 10% of all vehicle related fatalities.
Because head-on collisions often result in very serious injuries, victims are left with substantial, ongoing medical bills and, in some cases, are unable to work. For this reason, a person who has been injured or the immediate family members of someone who has dies in a Florida head-on car crash that is caused by another driver has the right to seek compensation for their loss by filing a Florida personal injury lawsuit.
