Alcohol a Possible Factor in Fatal Florida Hit-and-Run Bicycle Accident
Polk County Sheriff’s deputies are still conducting their investigation into a hit-and-run bicycle accident in Lakeland that killed a 51-year-old man but claim that they suspect alcohol was a contributing factor. They report that the victim was struck and killed while riding his bike near Deeson Road and Cherry Road around 1:30 a.m. one recent morning. They arrested a 21-year-old Lakeland man in connection with the fatal accident after a local resident found the victim lying in the middle of Deeson Road.
Safety Improvements Planned for Bike Path After Serious Florida Bicycle Accident
A recent bicycle accident that critically injured a Lakeland man on Lake Hollingsworth Drive has led to a series of planned safety improvements to protect bicyclists along the popular route. The accident occurred on March 1 at the entrance to the Lakeland Yacht & Country Club parking lot when a 61-year-old Lakeland man turned his Ford Ranger directly in front of three bicyclists. The accident left a 62-year-old Lakeland resident with life-threatening injuries and one of the other riders with minor injuries. The third cyclist, a 47-year-old man also from Lakeland, refused medical treatment after the accident.
U of F Student Critically Injured in Hit-and-Run Bicycle Accident
A University of Florida student is receiving care at Shands at the University of Florida and hospitalized in extremely critical condition after she was struck and injured in a recent hit-and-run bicycle accident. Accident investigators say that the 21-year-old woman was riding her bike near Southwest 16th Avenue near Archer Road when she was struck by a driver who fled the accident scene without stopping to help. She is being treated for severe head trauma, a broken arm and two broken legs, according to a Gainesville Police officer. He reports that a vehicle believed to be involved in the accident has been recovered, but no arrest has been made in connection with the incident.
Florida Bicycle Accident Kills Lifelong Public Servant
Recently, a SUV struck and killed LeRoy Collins Jr., a retired rear admiral and submariner in the U.S. Navy, department head for Governor Charlie Crist and son of former Florida Governor LeRoy Collins. Collins, 75, was riding his bike at 6 a.m. one morning in Tampa when the SUV struck him. Collins was Gov. Crist’s Executive Director of the Department of Veterans Affairs. Crist interrupted a Cabinet meeting in the Capitol to make the announcement, drawing audible gasps from many in attendance.

Growing Number of Bicyclists Increase Traffic Hazards
Many people are trying to improve their health and take advantage of our state’s wonderful weather at the same time by riding their bicycles. Florida Bicycle Accident Claims Life of Mother of Seven
CBS4 describes a tragic story where a mother of seven was struck and killed in a hit-and-run bicycle accident in Southern Florida. The 42-year-old victim was found lying on SW 222 Street at 1 a.m. in the morning recently. Police officials say that woman had been struck and killed by a driver who fled the scene of the accident. Officials with the Florida Highway patrol said that this Florida bicycle accident was the third in three days in which a person was killed by a hit-and-run driver.
Florida Bicycle Accident Kills Umatilla Woman
An article published in the Daily Commercial reports that a 49-year-old Umatilla woman was struck and killed while riding her bicycle recently. The Florida Highway Patrol said that the woman was struck from behind by a 2008 Toyota that threw her from her bike. She was taken to Florida Hospital Waterman where she was pronounced dead from her injuries. Law enforcement officials investigating the accident say that charges are pending against the 55- year-old driver of the Toyota-also from Umatilla-who told police that the glare from the sun prevented her from seeing the bicyclist.
