Orlando auto accident attorney James O. Cunningham would like to caution readers to be extra careful this summer while traveling on crowded Florida roadways and make sure to leave plenty of space between their vehicles and the vehicles in front of them. A series of collisions involving six cars on Interstate 4 near the intersection with Sand Lake Road has resulted in two people being treated in local hospitals with serious injuries. Florida Highway Patrol troopers issued citations to three drivers involved in the accidents, which occurred shortly after 4 a.m. one recent morning.
The accidents began when a 23-year-old Marion County woman drove onto I-4 from Sand Lake Road. As she drove onto westbound I-4, she attempted to cut across all lanes of traffic and collided with a Toyota Corolla. The driver of the Corolla suffered minor injuries in the accident, and the driver who caused the accident was issued a citation for making improper lane changes. This crash led to two more accidents shortly thereafter.
A 22-year-old Kissimmee woman driving a 1999 Mazda who had witnessed the accident slowed to avoid colliding with the wreckage. The driver of a 2011 Toyota Camry who was closely following her failed to notice that the Mazda had slowed and crashed into it, seriously injuring the woman and her passenger. Both were taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center for treatment, and the driver of the Camry was ticketed for careless driving.
Another driver, a 21-year-old Orlando woman, who had observed the second accident also slowed to avoid striking the wreckage. When she slowed down, she was rear-ended by an Orlando man driving a 2007 Lincoln. No one involved in the third accident was seriously injured, and the 52-year-old driver of the Lincoln was ticketed for careless driving.
These are three cautionary tales about the dangers, and possibly life-changing consequences, of failing to drive defensively. This series of accidents began when one driver unwisely tried to cut across multiple lanes of traffic. That risky and reckless driving maneuver directly led to the first accident and indirectly led to the two other collisions. If you have suffered an injury due to a reckless driver, you may be able to receive damages from the driver and his or her insurance company to pay medical expenses and compensate you for damage to your vehicle and other damages.
